WNBA star Brittney Griner recently appeared in court and her lawyer says that her detention in Russia has been extended for at least another month.
According to the Associated Press, Brittney’s lawyer Alexander Boikov said although her time has been extended, he believes this means her case would come to trial soon. As many of you know, she was detained back in February after vape cartridges containing oil derived from cannabis were allegedly found in her luggage, which the Russians consider a criminal offense.
Boikov said, “We did not receive any complaints about the detention conditions from our client.”
It wasn’t until earlier this month that the Biden administration declared that she was wrongfully detained while in Russia. Her detainment came as the war between Russia and Ukraine began to heighten. Back in March, her detention was extended to May 19th.
As the start of the WNBA season quickly began to roll around, her agent Lindsay Kagawa Colas previously spoke out and said, “Brittney has been detained for 75 days and our expectation is that the White House do whatever is necessary to bring her home.”
Brittney has been receiving support from her peers within the WNBA and the NBA. As previously reported, earlier this week the Phoenix Suns unveiled a new decal on their court ahead of the playoff game against the Dallas Mavericks. The week prior, her team the Phoenix Mercury unveiled the same decal, as well as the other WNBA teams.
The WNBA will also allow the Phoenix Mercury to continue to pay her this season without it being counted against the team’s cap.
