Elliot Page Reminds Us That Jeans and a Blazer Can Be More Than Business Casual

There’s a certain alchemy to wearing jeans with a blazer. It’s one of those outfit combos that, as a general rule, is timeless—but in execution can be tricky to get right. The formula is subject to the whims of how people are feeling about jeans (or suits, or jackets). Go too baggy and you run the risk of looking like you’re attending a Planet Hollywood party in 1992; too fitted and you run the risk of looking like you’re posing for this magazine in 2013.

These days, we’ve tilted back towards the late ’80s, early ’90s more-is-more end of the spectrum. Helpfully, Elliot Page gave a masterclass in the look last night on Late Night With Seth Meyers, pairing a freaky oversized Gucci blazer and crispy APC blue jeans.

Page, who’s currently making the rounds to promote the latest season of Netflix’s The Umbrella Academy, has recently made a habit of making the “bad” suit look very, very good, insofar as the parameters of what makes a suit good have gotten a little twisted lately. Taking a page from the Fran Lebowitz book of hardy denim and big jackets, his monogrammed Gucci jacket (and matching loafers!) feels cool and weird at the same time, in the way that only an outfit that could take you from talking on a late-night show to teaching a Philosophy 101 seminar could.

“In our fitting, Elliot was gravitating towards a lot of classic tailoring with a twist,” stylist Britt Theodora, who dressed Page last night, tells GQ via email. “Elliot has a very classic style so it’s been fun adding new interesting elements to it. He is open-minded to fashion and having fun with it while still staying true to his usual timeless aesthetic.”

Having fun with it is where Page’s head is at these days, too. “What I want to focus on right now and has been so extraordinary is the degree of joy that I feel, the degree of presence I feel,” he told Meyers during the show. “I feel a way I never really thought possible for a long, long time.”

That throughline has run through Page’s formalwear recently, too, from the boxy-sleek Gucci tux he wore to the Oscars to the oversized couture-prom Balenciaga suit he wore to the Met Gala. It’s fun to see it play out in some more casual looks, to—an alchemy in itself.
